Zatoichi – “The Draw” [Raglan]

The beloved Japanese character Zatoichi has been the subject of short stories, manga, stage plays, TV series, and of course, most famously, films. The undisputable fact is that actor Shintaro Katsu, who played the blind swordsman in 26 movies and 100 TV episodes is THE Zatoichi. Taking place in the Edo era, Ichi is a yakuza gambler with a heart of gold that works as a masseur, has a tendency to put on a false, bumbling demeanor, and is a legendarily skilled swordsman. He carries a shikomi-zue (hidden cane-sword), and uses an atypical inverted sword style (with the blade pointing towards the ground) to dispatch his enemies. He uses violence reluctantly, and always to protect the innocent, oppressed, and down-trodden, or as a final means of self defense. Ichi is a man of great humanity- a true hero. Katsu’s incredible dramatic and physical performance is unforgettable, and combined with the film series’ stirring music and high quality productions has produced some of the greatest samurai movies of all time. – Kung Fu Bob
