Return of Shaolin Chamber 36

by SMK on August 1, 2010 · 9 comments in News & Updates

Shaolin Chamber 36 has been down for roughly 5 months, and during this time I have gone through a tremendous life-changing event. After several years of service, I lost my extremely well paying job (along with excellent benefits) due to company closure. I will not go over the negative aspects resulting from this occurrence, but rather the positives as they pertain to the Chamber. After spending a number of grueling, mind-numbing, and physically exhausting hours at my previous place of employment, there was one thing that I was indeed looking forward to during some much-needed time off. Getting in, and structurally laying down a foundation for a new and improved Shaolin Chamber that myself and the fans alike could enjoy. I have already spent many, many hours working on the site (often night and day) sometimes just to accomplish something so minor as to be unnoticed if not pointed out. The majority of the rebuild was based on coding, CSS/PHP work more than the cosmetic changes made to the site. I will list the details to some of the key improvements. If there is anything you do not like, or if you have any feature suggestions you would like to see implemented on the site, PLEASE feel free to contact me with any questions, feedback, or comments you may have. You could speak up using the new Chamber Discussion box located on the right sidebar. For those of you that have been visiting Shaolin Chamber since it’s creation, back at the end of 2004, or to those who are new to the site and may be visiting for the first time, I hope you enjoy the new look, feel, vibe, and Qi of Shaolin Chamber 36.

I also must stress that this site is BEST VIEWED with the latest version of the Mozilla Firefox browser. I may still need to work out some kinks for full support of other browsers, so bear with me.

Details of the major changes and improvements.

New Post Showcase

This flash rotating box is in place to showcase all the latest posts that have been made. The excerpt box displays briefly, and if you would like it to show longer before it slowly disappears, simply place your mouse cursor anywhere inside the box. You can also click on the right arrow in the box to go to the next post, or click the left arrow to go back to the previous highlighted post. You can also pause the current box from transitioning to the next by clicking on the countdown box located in the top right. Click it again to continue. To actually go to any of the highlighted posts and read the full article, simply click on the image (not the excerpt box) to proceed to the post.

Sounds From The Chamber

Once a week I will feature an audio track that pertains to the martial arts film genre. Whether it be an original audio track heard from a particular movie, a song or segment ripped directly from a film, a chosen excerpt, or even the full length audio commentary track. Simply click on the audio clip title or the Play button on the left side to begin play. You also have the ability to DOWNLOAD and save these audio files directly from this section or by visiting the Sound Chamber archive. If you have songs/sound files from a martial arts film, or even just know of a source of a movie’s soundtrack, and you would like to contribute the audio file or knowledge you may have, please proceed to click on the ‘Upload Audio’ button.

Daily FuTube Showcase

A new YouTube video will be showcased daily. The video will of course have something to do with martial arts films, or of the arts in itself. I will also write a description for each video. If you have ever watched a YouTube video, and read its comments, usually there are references made regarding a specific point in the video, I will be providing from my perspective these ‘Points of Interest’ myself. There is also a ‘Submit A Link’ button, which will take you to your email where you can submit any noteworthy YouTube video links that you think may be of interest to the visitors of SC36. To play the video on showcase, click on the red arrow Play button located on the video’s preview image.

Chamber Discussion

This is basically a shout box that can be used to leave a comment, feedback, or a general statement that you wouldn’t mind others reading. You do not have to include your email or URL, but if you do, then the name you use for the box will be clickable to the email/url you provided. Please use this box as it was intended, and not for spamming. After all, Monks Hate Spam.

New Cover Scans & Alternative Covers Text Listings

I have added a new way to search through all the covers on this site (Cover Scans & Alternative Covers). Now besides the normal Thumbnail view, there is also an easy-to-look-up text listing with search capabilities. One of of the new features in this format is the ability to search for a cover by the name of the movie, or even by the distributor’s name. There are also 4 options when viewing in text list format. You can “copy to clipboard” the entire listing, “Save as CSV“, “Save for Excel”, and “Print Table”. These will all come in handy for offline viewing. The search feature will automatically show you results as you type in the search box. To get back to normal viewing of the complete listing, simply clear the search box. Also, clicking on the header title for either of the two sections; Movie Title & Distributor, will sort the content in ascending or descending alphabetical order.

Toolbar

There is a new Toolbar feature which is located at the very bottom of the site. On the right hand side you can close and open the toolbar. In it you will find links to Shaolin Chamber 36’s Fan page, (this is a different link then the one on the left side of the site). There is also a link to the Twitter page. You can also view ALL the videos I have uploaded to my YouTube account in the stylish gallery. One of the best features in the toolbar is the ability to go into a live chat room. Which you can login in to by using your MySpace, Facebook, or Twitter account names, or just by simply making up a name on the spot. I will set up designated times for live chatting with your fellow martial arts film fans, so please try your best to drop by and let’s talk some FU!

There are many new features, but hopefully these will be all self explanatory on viewing. I really hope everyone enjoys the new look and feel of Shaolin Chamber 36. Whether you do or not, PLEASE use the Chamber Discussion box or the Contact link in the footer to let me know what you think. I would really appreciate it. Let’s Keep the Fu Alive.

Buddha Bless You.

Ray,

Are you looking to start a gallery of blu-ray cover arts? I can start it off by scanning the few Asian blu-rays I have.

Ray,

it doesn’t have to be a section, but I was thinkng maybe you can cater to jidai-geki fans by having afew content on samurai and ninja films.

Salutations Brother!!! It’s so awesome to see the site back up (ie. the chamber open), and it looks fantastic. Love the improvements, especially the listing of titles for DVD cover updates. I look forward to reading everything on here and contributing more to the site. Best wishes and good luck to you and your family! Peace, Bob

Glad to see your site back up and running. In addition, can’t wait to chat with some of you Fu lovers.

Ray,
Any chance of implementing a section for samurai and ninja films?

When you say a section for ninja and samurai films, what exactly do you have in mind? Thanks for the comment.
