RIP Ric Ocasek, lead singer of The Cars

Recommended Posts

Found dead in his New York apartment today, apparently of natural causes.

I like how music critic Robert Palmer described their style "they have taken some important but disparate contemporary trends—punk minimalism, the labyrinthine synthesizer and guitar textures of art rock, the '50s rockabillyrevival and the melodious terseness of power pop—and mixed them into a personal and appealing blend."

Aside from singing, he had a memorable cameo as a beatnik with Pia Zadora in the original 1988 version of Hairspray

The Cars' music and Ric's voice  were an essential sound of the Eighties when I was a teenager. Their video for You Might Think I'm Crazy was so far out and innovative for the time that, yes, we would all run into the living-room to watch it if we heard it come on (or were alerted by another household member). I still spin their tunes to this day.

Thanks for everything Ric. R.I.P.
