RIP Go Kato, Japanese Film Actor

Recommended Posts

Japanese actor Go Kato died of bladder cancer on June 18, 2018 at the age of 80.  He first became an actor in 1962, appearing in a Japanese TV series.  He "is perhaps best known for playing the title character Ooka Tadasuke, the samurai magistrate, in the live-action Edo period drama Ooka Echizen from 1970 to 1999."  He also appeared in the TV movie Ooka Echizen: Shirasu ni Saita Shinjitsu in 2016.  He had roles in Sword of the Beast (1965), Samurai Rebellion (1967), Tengu-to (1969), Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (1972), Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart to Hades (1972), Kumokiri Nizaemon (aka Bandits vs. Samurai Squadron, 1978), and Death of a Tea Master (1989).  In 1992 he played Chiune Sugihara in the TV movie, The Visas That Saved Lives.  (During WW II, as Japanese vice consul in Lithuania, Sugihara signed thousands of visas for Jews fleeing Europe.)  In 1995, he was the voice of Otto Frank in the Japanese anime feature, The Diary of Anne Frank (Anne no nikki).  His final movie was Tonight at the Movies (Kon'ya, romansu gekijo de, 2018).  There isn't a photo of him on IMDB, so I took one from his obituary at https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2018-07-09/actor-go-kato-passes-away-at-80/.134033   Other info from IMDB, Wikipedia, and http://the-japan-news.com/news/article/0004570595
