The Weinstein Company Renamed to Lantern Entertainment

Recommended Posts

If you haven't heard the story, Harvey Weinstein was fired from his own company by the board (including Harvey's own brother Bob) this past weekend and now it looks like the company is in the midst of changing their name. If you have heard, then this is an update on the fate of the Weinstein Company and you know the details, which resulted in Harvey being pretty much all but "tarred and feathered in a public place".

No word on the new name or when the new name will launch.

Whatever name they decide on, no doubt it'll most likely start wih 'The Legend of......'

Seems like various scenes from our favorite Asian movies aren't the only things old Harvey has been wanting to keep out of the public eye.

Well, Bob Weinstein owns Dimension Films (the genre label of TWC)...maybe there's a chance TWC could fold into that? I know Disney owns the name Miramax now so that's out.

I remember that even years before this happened, women were coming forward calling him out. All of a sudden now that the one-millionth person stepped forward with evidence now people actually wake up. Good, now hopefully another offender is *maybe* put away and we'll probably (or not) get more unedited material.

There have been rampant rumors that The Weinstein Company is in the midst of either shutting down operations or even be put up for sale. Bob Weinstein squashed those rumors and if everyone hasn't heard by now, has denounced his brother's actions and practically disowned him as a result.

They still will be releasing the horror film Polaroid on November 22 and Paddington 2 on January 12 in the U.S. It is still being rumored that the company many get a name change.

There will be a meeting tomorrow of the board at TWC and Harvey may threaten some sort of legal action. This past Saturday, Harvey has been expelled from AMPAS and French President Macron is filing paperwork to take away Harvey's Legion of Honor.

At a meeting today, Harvey Weinstein resigned from the board at TWC. Colony Capital has given the company a cash infusion to keep the company going, which Bob Weinstein is pushing to change the name and bring in female board members.

A few months later. Here's a bit of an update that I read on the Dark Horizons site:

Maria Contreras-Sweet, the former Small Business Administrator under President Obama, is reportedly in talks to purchase the debt-ridden indie distributor with a group of investors for around $500 million. Under Contreras-Sweet, the company would be led by a majority-female board of directors and team of investors.

The company is exploring name changes with possibilities including Wonder Hill and Creative Trade Studios .

Well, the deal that was expected to be signed by former Head of Small Business Administration Maria Contreras-Sweet has now been rescinded. Thanks to interference by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who is insisting on inserting a monitor on the board of the new company, Contreras-Sweet grew infuriated and has now withdrawn her $500 million offer to buy TWC. So the fate of the Weinstein Company still hangs in the balance at this time.

This appeared online yesterday - "The Time Studio Ghibli Stood Up To Harvey Weinstein With A Katana" at

In part - "Among the many things for which former Hollywood mogul and alleged predator Harvey Weinstein was notorious were re-editing movies as he saw fit, earning the nickname “Harvey Scissorhands.” But when Weinstein was handling Princess Mononoke’s US release, Studio Ghibli wouldn’t be bullied and sent Weinstein a samurai sword with the words “No cuts” to prove it."

The deal is done...The Weinstein Company has officially been sold to the private equity firm Lantern Capital Partners and will be renamed Lantern Entertainment. A judge approved a $21 million reduction due to payments owed to talents who had worked for TWC.

Lantern Entertainment's co-presidents, Andy Mitchell and Milo Brajovic, promised to “operate this company with the absolute highest level of ethics.”
