Hei Meigui

What is the most recent Shaw Brother's film you've seen?

Recommended Posts

Second watching of The crimson charm after around 10 years.

An excellent but not often talked about movie about two students avenging their master and their school after everyone has been murdered by the crimson charm gang.

Chang Yi and Ling Po are great. James Nam and Shih Szu are underused here.

Knowing that this movie is directed by Huang Feng, who gave us such great movies as The shaolin plot, The fast sword and most of Angela Mao's movie, no wonder that The crimson charm is such a superb movie !

A MAD WORLD OF FOOLS, directed by David Chiang. Kaleidoskope of then contemporary Hong Kong love life in episodes of differing length, some of them didn't age well. David Chiang also stars in the two longest ones which were quite amusing.

Boxer rebellion. Purchased Koch bluray was reason enough to revisit this chang cheh epic. Excellent Fu Sheng, Chi Kuan Chun and Leung Kar Yan are patriots fighting against japanese and european invaders. Chi Kuan Chun is only of them who seems to have brains too besides courage(=about  suicidal thing here), and he is best here although other 2 shine also. Movie suffers from one thing there is not single 1:1 great fight but otherwise than that, no flaws. Lots of action combined with drama makes this very enjoyable over 2 hours of viewing.

Interestingly when Boxers(fighters who resist japanese) gets some success (thanks to cunning wang lung wei who falsely is taking credit and is not really interested fate of China but seeks to take advantage of conflict) they become almost as bad towards own countrymen as japanese if there is extremely slight doubt there is connection to foreigners.

Concept whether kung fu can resist guns is in much better use here than in Legendary weapons of china where fighters give display of Iron Armour to Empress, Legendary may excel in action but Rebellion is far superior movie IMO.

CHINATOWN KID - thanks to Koch Media, I finally saw the long version. Story and characters make much more sense now! I would not have minded this version having the happy end too though. Provided it would stop after FS's arrest, since the remaining scenes after his death in the short version are kinda stupid.

rivals of kung fu. Revisit and so memory cannot be trusted always. Had impression this was good one but like hell it is...Waterthin plot about Wong Fei Hung and rival Shek Kin who in the end are after winning trophy in lion dance contest. There are retard son of big shot wong fei hung tries to help and police officer and other persons after money which seems often to be 500$ in sort of subplots blah blah...

Probably tries to be comedy but exceptionally unfunny...Dare to say this is worse movie than crazy shaolin disciples I really hate but not want to check it out to verify.

Couple if minutes ok action in middle and in the end but recommend to avoid this.

Lily Li is very much underused.

I watched Killer darts two days ago after 10 years and I enjoyed it a lot !

Very good movie in which our late Chin Ping and Yueh Hua are pairing once again as the lead couple struggling against a group of bandits who want to get money from the poor villagers of the village in which they live after having been vagabonds for years during which they were looking for the murderer of Yueh Hua's mother.

Chin Ping has been raised by Yueh Hua's father after this latter pupil has killed her parents and she is also in search of her parents murderer.

Chang Pei Shan plays the evil pupil who makes her believe that it's Yueh Hua's father who killed her mother with his killer dart, though it's him who used it.

Superb movie, that it's not very much talked about here, if I'm not mistaken.

Fang Mian plays Yueh Hua's father and is very good too. Another actor who isn't very much talked about on forums though he is very talented...

And a special mention to Peng Peng, who plays the servant, and to Wei Ping Ao playing a martial arts expert ! I think that it's the first time I saw him as a fighter, but maybe I'm mistaken. I just took a look at his hkmdb page and saw that he died in 1989 ! I wasn't even aware of this !

Lost Souls. Illegal immigrants gets captured by savage smugglers/slave traders and after lot raping and some torturing it`s inevitable escape+revenge.

Movie drags quite a lot in middle and has serious lack of character development but end is very clever

Spoiler

when one of immigrants finally reaches his destination and Diamond Hill was not what he believed it to be...

I don`t remember anymore were directors Men Behind The Sun good exploitation flicks or not but at least his deadly secret is masterpiece.

Time is rare, after all I heard/ read, I will most probably pass LOST SOULS, same with BAMBOO HOUSE.

FLYING GUILLOTINE 2 - the only Ti Lung movie I had only watched once so far (well it does not have that much Ti Ling screentime anyways). Enjoyed the movie but it does not have the same "impact" as the first one. Another instant ending - had to watch it twice to be sure how it ended.

Bamboo house is actually quite ok, one of the better Shaw exploitation films and it has some good action too which was surprising. I rejected it quite long time but was surprised it wasn`t bad like was expecting. And as it has Lo Lieh that is good reason enough to see it....Definitely a lot superior than Lost Souls.

I agree with Tex Killer regarding Bamboo House of Dolls : there is a good plot and good action tooso, you shouldn't pass it...

:monk_laughing: I don't even remember how it ends !! Nor do I remember much of the plot except that Ti Lung has to invent a new weapon in order to destroy the guillotines...

godfather of canton. Rarely talked Shaw crime movie is little gem, one of kuei chih hung`s better movies..

Gordon liu as helping in operation gets as reward low grade job in local police force but through manipulation quickly rises in status. But his goal is in underworld, not in law enforcement....

Brilliant movie really, only minor gripe is few humor bits not really fit into movie where almost everybody dies. Lots of gun action, martial arts are in minimal use.

I totally agree with you !

I already watched it twice and never got bored with it. The only bad thing is that the ending is too sad, but on another side, it shows that Gordon Liu's characteris heroic enough to leave his bad purpose and help Wong Yung to fulfill his mission.

Shaw through distribution deal only I assume, wong jings casino tycoon is pretty bad movie. 2 youngster escape japanese threat to macao and their ambition is to get rich....Plot is not bad although far from original but it`s they way wong jing handles it...not much action, lot dragging and even casino business is barely touched. Far too much time is spent into traitor in macao bunch and ending...

Spoiler

huh, his parents try to kill him for reward.

If Shaws been involved to movie it could have turned out ok. Well at least it has chingamy yau and joey wong but they have been in better roles&movies often...

Bought ivl box set some years ago, hopefully part 2 turns out to be better...

VENGEFUL BEAUTY - I would have preferred more Flying Guillotines and less flying breasts but oh well  :yociexp111:  Loved the fight scene in the bamboo forest.

Spoiler

Usually I "smell" the traitor but this time it was a complete surprise for me! What a sad ending. After losing husband, child, family, and being betrayed she also had to lose brother Ma! I would have really enjoyed seeing them riding towards the sunset together.

THE DEADLY DUO - eacht time I watch this movie, I like it even more. Glorious deadly dynamic duo! Ti Lung with the Big Double Axe, what a sight for sore eyes. Despite the regrettable pointless waste of young fighters trying to cross the bridge. You want to scream, guys, go get a rope! And then it turns out they did have a rope all the time. Oh well.

Trapeze Girl (1967).  Actually not a bad picture at all. It can always be a hit or miss with some of these sixties dramas.  Lo Lieh was a real piece of work (lol) in this film and didn't get his just deserts. I empathized with and highly enjoyed the performance by Fang Ying. Sad to read that she passed in 2010. Yueh Hua also handled his role nicely. Think it's the first film of his I've watched since his death. A few fights but nothing martial arts related. Always intriguing to see actual footage of HK way back when.

casino tycoon 2. Taking place 20 years after 1st movie, andy lau is now succesful casino mogul and father of 2...complicated family matters and ambitious member of board gives trouble for him blah blah...

Unfortunately sequel is even weaker than part 1. It in my opinion fails on all levels..humor is dire, not much action and what there is not impressive at all. Drama does not work either and does not help wong jing jokes about it. Unfortunately not much gambling either. Michere Reis who many have likely seen in kid from tibet, swordsman 2 and chinese ghost story 2 is best thing in flick but for sake of her not worth watching this wreck.

Because of star cast no wonder shaw brothers got interested of movies but why 88 picked part 1 instead of something decent...

They even do not feel like proper movies but instead miniseries compiled into 2 discs...

👎

double re(++++) revisits of masked avengers and Martial Club.

Not huge fan of lau kar leung but martial club is his best movie...even great heroes of the east loses to this...trouble between 2 kung fu schools works out extremely fine, stellar performance by every1, but specially wang lung wei as sort of fair guy...ok shaolin mantis is close to those 2 also, very small marginal really which finest as all are subliminal masterpieces.

I think everyone who reads this already know how brilliant Masked Avengers is but fight in end is still and remains totally amazing. Trident action might be best weapon fight ever filmed.

I din't even know that he had had bad criticism !

As you say, his fights were as good as those of the other venoms in the movie, and I think that he is a good actor in martial arts movies.

I recently got some series in which he is one of ht emain characters, and his fights are very good too from what I saw when testing the episodes.

I didn't watch a lot of his movies, but the one i didn't like him in was The cheeky chap. It's not for the fights, but for the character he impersonated...
