A film that looks this whimsical and cutesy is bound to be insufferable, right?

Hey Takuma, existing thread about this one here -

Fixing Japanese cinema's image problem
- http://www.filmbiz.asia/news/fixing-japanese-cinemas-image-problem

Very interesting read and good stuff Adam Torel.

Fantastic find and real, thanks for posting this.  Adam Torel is like a one man wrecking ball, he makes a lot of valid points.

The fact that over 50% of the movies in this thread (& I'd venture to say around 90% of the total movies you post about!) don't have English subtitled releases is a travesty, with a film industry that couldn't care less.  It's a miracle Torel has stuck around in it for as long as he has, and I hope he stays around for a long time to come.

Sogo Ishii hasn't been so interesting in the recent years (although I'm one of the few people who rather enjoyed Isn't Anyone Alive?) but these stills for his new film That's It (Soredake) sure have an old school Ishii wibe to them!

And yes, that's Shota Sometani. That guy's 22 years old and he has already worked with Sion Sono (three times), Sogo Ishii (twice), Takashi Miike (twice), Koji Wakamatsu, Ryuichi Hiroki, Shinji Aoyama, Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Takahisa Zeze, just to mention a few examples. Damn...

Opens May 27th

No trailer yet, but website + poster

news_xlarge_soredake_postervisual.jpg

According to the poster the film's sound mix is "3 Channel Bazooka Sound"

Trailer for That's It (Soredake)!

Gonna go see this as soon as it opens.

Saw this tonight. After the first 15 minutes everyone in the audience were like:

sored.jpg

In other words, it was rocking everyone's socks off.

It does slow down after that, and frankly you could lose 20 minutes from the middle part. Towards the end it picks up again and comes close to greatness until the crappy gun and blood CGI kinda takes you out of it.

But it's not a bad movie. I think I'd watch the whole thing again just for the first 15 min. That's the Ishii who gave us Crazy Thunder Road and Shuffle there.

Needless to say Shota Sometani is fine in the movie. He's now what Tadanobu Asano was 12 years ago. Erina Mizuno is good, too, and pretty. And the bazooka sound and the music by Blood Thirsty Butchers rocks.

The Japanese DVD and BD releases by King Records will contain English subs. The release date is January 20, 2016

Dear God. New Sailor Suit and Machine Gun movie coming next year from Kadokawa. It's called Sailoir fuku to kikanju: sotsugyou (Sailor Suit and Machine Gun: Graduation), directed by some never-heard Koji Maeda and starring Kanna Hashimoto from an idol group called Rev. from DVL (I don't have a clue what that means).

Of course there are many good sequels and remakes out there - but... it's a sequel for an all time idol classic directed by Shinji Somai and starring Hiroko Yakushimaru and Tsunehiko Watase. That's just not a good starting point for a sequel, even if you had a talented crew. You have a lot to live up to. And this trailer looks horrible...

And man, do I feel old when I see Hashimoto was born in 1999. That was like a few years ago

Image13.jpg

Trailer:

Thank God I'm old enough to understand I don't need to see this. I can just watch the original a few more times (I have it on DVD and BD, and I've seen it on 35mm as well).

I'm a little late with this, but:

Cannes: Toei Pitches Shunji Iwai Return to Live Action Film

"...Iwai set out a multi-seasonal shooting schedule to fulfill an ambition to shoot a film that captures the beauty of Japan’s four seasons. Lensing will wrap in August, with theatrical distribution in Japan set between February and April next year.

The story involves a couple, their online personas, jealousy, divorce and cynical manipulations...."

Very much looking forward to this. Swallowtail Butterfly and All About Lily Chou Chou are both among the 10 best movies ever made for me, and April Story is right behind them. Iwai's latest live action, Vampire, was very uneven but still fascinating. Interesting to see how the new film will turn out.

The title is The Bride of Rip Van Winkle. Opens 2016/03/26 in Japan.

The website is also active, with a teaser that shows nothing.

The poster is a thing of beauty

Two new films coming from Nobuhiro Yamashita in 2016:

[Ryuhei] Matsuda also plays the protagonist of Nobuhiro Yamashita's “My Uncle,” a philosophical freeloader scheming to save up for a trip to Hawaii to reunite with the girl of his dreams.

Director Yamashita continues to be quietly prolific, keeping one foot in the commercial arena and the other in the independent scene. His other feature scheduled for release, “Over Fence,” starring Joe Odagiri, Yu Aoi and Shota Matsuda, is an adaptation of a novel by author Yasushi Sato, whose “Sketches of Kaitan City” and “The Light Shines Only There” provided dark and heavily dramatic material for two excellent films.

Yamashita directing Yu Aoi! That's my dream come true!

oh, and there's still no DVD/BD release of Chonoryoku kenkyubu no 3 nin. It's available on some streaming service(s?) though.

The lineup for Yubari is online. Let's see what we've got.

Hana-Dama: Phantom
Hisayasu Sato's follow up to his Carries style horror/splatter Hana-Dama: Origins (2014). Written by Shinji Imaoka again.

hanad.jpg

Dorome: Danshi hen & Dorome: Joshi hen
A duo of horror films by the always interesting violence director Eisuke Naito (Puzzle, Miscarriage Club, Litchi Hikari Club). They are literally titled "The Male Version" and "The Female Version". They're both feature films and run about 90 minutes each.

Make(up) Room 2
Kei Morikawa made a sequel to his 2015 Grand Prix winner. I suppose I'll be seeing this, but they are also showing a film called Goodbye, Tits at the same time, so it's a hard choice to make...

Dream Theater
Low budget Asami trash with some good looking action and bloodshed. Runs 28 min.

And gotta love this broken English intro to Noboru Iguchi's new film Devotion to Cinema:
"Record breaking number of kisses between girls brought a sensation to viewers. What the girls witnessed after kisses  another masterpiece from Noboru Iguchi, reflecting this director’s aestheticism and lyricism."

I'm sure there are many other interesting films waiting to be discovered. I'm a little sad that Nishimura won't be there, though (probably busy shooting Meatball Machine).

Koji Shiraishi just released a new film, Vauxhall Rideshow, which was made exclusively for 4DX theatres. It only runs 25 minutes.

Here's one guy sharing his feelings after the screening:

"I saw Vauxhall Rideshow. The smell of high school girl is amazing! High school girls are amazing! Thank you, director Shiraishi!!"

Trailer for Noboru Iguchi's new film Devotion to Cinema (Kinema junjo). Not what you'd expect.

In Yubari next month. Not too excited about the film, but Iguchi's gonna be there and the man's always worth seeing live.

So essentially, this is "Why Don't You Play In Hell" with schoolgirl lesbians instead of the Yakuza? Cool.
