  1. Just wow... One the best movies Scott Adkins ever did. Non-linear story, brutal fights, a bit of gore, decent plot, acting, directing - can't really complain about anything. Great example of how to make a good movie on a low budget. Kudos to everybody involved!
  2. As far as I remember, trailers for Maria and Furie came out around the same time. I wasn't impressed with Maria at all and was very interested in watching Furie. Now, when I watched both movies, I gotta say, to my surprise, I liked Maria more Furie has better acting(maybe because nobody was speaking broken English), has somewhat better defined characters, but it also has too much drama for my taste and not enough action. Except for the first fight where the main heroine beats some thugs at the market, the rest fights are much better choreographed and executed. They all cramped in the last 30 min, while for the whole first hour we don't have any real action While being a better movie overall and featuring better fights(comparing to Maria), I still didn't like Furie as much
  3. I rather liked it. No doubt, the acting is atrocious, but I don't watch MA movies for some great acting. Of course, it would be nice to see some great performances, interesting plot, but hey, you can't have everything in life/ Anywho. The plot is not original and been done to death, but fights are plentiful, albeit not all of them are equally good. We have 3-4 rather weak ones, but the rest, while not exceptional, are pretty decent. You got some handwork, knife action, use of environment, etc. Can't say the choreo was bad. Shootouts are pretty decent, too, slightly ruined by CGI blood, but at this day and age it's so common and widespread, that I can't blame the creators for that Overall, I wasnt crazy about the movie, but I won't diss it. I even go as far as saying that I found it more enjoyable, than, let's say, Vengeance with Bennet(what a piece of crap that was!), Skin Trade or the recent MJW's vehicle The Hard Way, not mentioning the bunch of others
  4. The poster with shooting Adkins and flying jets must be a joke. I wonder why there are no space rockets, tanks and huge explosions on this poster. Crumbling skyscrapers are also missing Here's a review of the movie - https://asianfilmstrike.com/2019/05/04/abduction-2019-review/ I'd say, it's pretty close to what I thought, maybe a bit too flattering. The movie is more of an Andy On vehicle, he really gets to shine here and has the best action scenes. The whole sequence of him taking on the Russian mafia is worth the price of admission, it's that great. It deserves to be in a much better movie. I was really disappointed in Adkins, playing a mumbling retarded stutterer basically for the whole movie. He should stick with playing psycho bad guys, he was born for those roles. His fights were OK, not bad at all, but nothing extraordinary. Overall, not a very bad cheapo ruined by the third act which was pretty dumb and stupid.
  5. 2 DragonClaws: Aw, man, you beat me to it! I was about to post the link to the trailer :)
  6. Really great, great stories! Happy for you, lucky man! I only saw Jackie Chan, Sammo and Mina Godenzi, so I can imagine how excited you were seeing all the greats (And, as someone mentioned above, it was great to see who rdeen is :) Loved your old youtube channels, man, I remember how pissed off I was when they were shut down. I think I even got a few movies from your collection through a mutual friend) Again, thanks for sharing this!
  7. Hell, yeah!!! I don't know what Skott Adkins is like in real life, probably, he's nice and sweet, but he is GREAT playing a loose canon, borderline psycho types. How it was precisely put in Accident Man: " I just don't fight people anymore, I f**king destroy them!"
  8. Random thoughts A bit above average action flick. Not the best for anybody in the cast, but a better effort for many. Iko had the worst fights, (well, Jeeja Yanin got it even worse, but that's not the point). The point is, Iko was totally wasted here Tiger chan got some OK-ish fights in the beginning, but it was downward after that Michael J White had a blast, wisecracking through the whole movie. His fights suck, though, as usual. Slow and even sloppy at times. I don't think he had any great onscreen fights in his whole career, except for the magnificent Blood and Bone and some very good moments in Phoenix Rising Tony Jaa got the top billing - that was a surprise. Probably his best role after his Thai movies, as good as SPL2 Scott Adkins was the only guy who really shined. His fight with Jaa, obviously, was the highlight of the movie. One of the best one-on-one fights in Jaa's movie career, if not the best. Adkins is still fast and agile as ever Putting rather small Asian fighters against white (and a black) musclemen didn't look like a good idea to me Right up to the police station sequence the movie was well-paced and the story was good. After that, it all went downhill It was nice to see Michael wong and hear him speaking English Gunfights were... Meh... Did absolutely nothing for me. I could understand gathering all the greats of the MA world in a gunfight movie if before mentioned shootouts were as great as John Woo's ones, but here we were treated to the most primitive point-and-shoot gunfights The main guy to blame - Tim Man( it hurts me to say this, 'cause I love some of his work and use to praise him a lot). After a superb job on Ninja2 and Boyka4 he did a lackluster job in Accident Man(his fight with Adkins there was just plain boring) and now this. I can't say the choreo totally sucked, some moments were top-notch, but for the most part it was so generic, so un-inventive and totally unimaginative. I said it a gazillion times, - a great MA movie is made by a great fight choreographer. The fighters, for the most part, are not so important. If your choreo sucks, the best onscreen fighters are not gonna save your movie Overall, a decent above average action movie, which for some totally unnecessary reason features some of the best martial artists working today
  9. I've seen 3 out of 5 nominated films and to me looks like the best action design should go to The Golden Job, even though it's not that good to be honest. How on Earth Project Gutenberg got a nomination is beyond me

    Revenger (2018)

Not gonna add anything new. Poor screenplay, bad acting, weak direction, bad pacing, out of place comedy...but the fights! Oh my God, the Fights! I'd say this movie features arguably the best onscreen fights since The Raid. Basically, no wires, no gimmicky editing, no shockingly gory FX, just pure MA awesomeness. Just the way I like'em The guy is beyond good. Easily one of the best kickers out there and one of the greatest screen fighters. I tried to look for some info on him and it looks like its his first leading role! He did some stunts and choreo before, but it looks like its his first real chance to shine. And he's not a young guy anymore. What a pity! Surprisingly, the end fight was as great as any previous fight in the movie. Haven't seen such a great one-on-one fight in a while Can't say that fast-forwarding between the fights would be a bad idea, but the fights definitely worth repeated viewing
  11. So glad to hear Eric got this gig! Hope it will help him to get in big production movies. Even if it's Bollywood for now
  12. the movie was pretty weak overall, but what ruined it completely was the very bad direction. There was enough action to satisfy an action junkie, but it was so horribly shot that totally ruined any impact the action scenes could've had. One of the perfect examples of unbelievably badly shot action.. Iko's scenes actually were nicely choreographed, nothing extraordinary, but good, however they were destroyed by editing. I mean, it literally looked like if somebody had an ultimate goal to ruin a fight scene. Even then it would take a lot of effort to do such a horrendous job. Borne's editing looks perfect comparing to the mess they did in Mile 22. Just awful... And I LOVED the trailer Off topic. I watched The Spy Who Dumped Me and was surprised how good the action was for that kind of a movie. There were 3 action sequences that I really enjoyed. And that's a dumb comedy! Creators of Mile 22 should be ashamed of themselves

    Peppermint (2018) - A Female "John Wick"?

I'll watch it. Didn't see any interesting action, but I'm a sucker for revenge films, so, hopefully, this one will be OK
  14. I'd say it's better than The Raid 2, the gore kinda reminds of another Iko's film, Headshot, but cranked up to the max. I agree that it's hardly a pure MA film, those are mostly brawls but God, so much thought was put in choreographing them, adding the make-up, CGI and such. High quality product
  15. Starts a bit slow, the first Iko's fight in a club is weirdly slow and kinda amateurish and that got me worried. But after that action was almost non-stop Pros - a real gore fest, never saw so much gore in a MA film. Special make-up and CGI effects are very good, nothing looks cheap. Inventive and creative action choreo. Quite a few cringe-worthy and wow! moments Cons - all the action was kinda slow, lacking that natural flow that is present in best action movies. It's hard to explain. Maybe, the action needed to be sped up a bit. I dunno. It wasnt frantic, non-stop movement, like in Raid, for example. Even the fights were somewhat slow-moving. Although, what the action lacked in pacing was completely compensated by the originality. And gore. So much gore I'd say it's a pretty unique movie. I can't compare it to any other film, I think it stands on it's own. Definitely was worth the wait. Wanna see it again. Can't wait for the Bluray, subs, no subs, doesnt matter

    Attrition (2017)

It's kinda hard to describe this movie. I can't say it's a great MA film and I can't call it a total crap either. For the first hour it's a typical low budget Seagal crap. A former special forces vet is living somewhere in South east Asia, treating locals with acupuncture, occasionally dropping few words of Wisdom and humbly playing a role of a semi God. To keep a viewer from falling asleep, there are few little bits of fighting where Seagal's body double punishes bad or not-so-good guys. Up to the last 20 minutes I was kept wondering why I'm watching that ridiculous excuse for a movie. I was a huge Seagal's fan back in the day so, I guess that's why. Anyway, in the last few minutes the movie explodes with action. Not superb, but quite decent, maybe unnecessary gory(although I like it like that). Siu-Wong Fan has a decent fight, shootouts are very good, lots of CGI and practical blood fx. It maybe lasts 10-12 minutes total, but it's better than any Seagals movie in a decade Few notes. Seagal, who now has a Russian citizenship has a Russian buddy in the movie, some Russian can be heard. There's some nudity, just to attract more male fans. I welcomed the use of CGI blood after kicks and punches, although it maybe a bit distracting. There's a quite original, shown in reverse scene, very unusual for that kind of movie (I mean a cheap seagal action film). The most ridiculous thing was Seagal listening to somebody speaking Mandarin and replying in English
  17. I'm not excited about any 4k bluray releases. Why should I be? First I watched all those movies on VHS, then on DVD, then Blu ray. I've seen them literally dozens of times and know them frame by frame. I don't even want to re-watch'em again anymore. Even DVDs are good enough for me. The less-than-perfect picture has its own charm and suits old HK movies just fine. I know, I'm not gonna enjoy a 4k version anymore than I enjoyed it years ago, watching a movie for the first time. Plus, I'm not a stupid teenager to waste my money on the same movie for the forth time. Although I understand a young HK movie fan buying it to enjoy the movie for the first time

Operation Red Sea (2018) Dante Lam

I'm not a fan of military action films, so I'm not as crazy about ORS as some other viewers. Still, I have to admit it's a very solid effort. As a film, it's much better than Wolf Warrior 2. The cinematography is superb, the locations are great, the whole movie is a real eye candy. It would be a great achievement even for Hollywood, so to see a Chinese film shot on such scale is quite surprising. As far as visuals go, I can't praise it enough. The plot was a bit disappointing, somewhat predicable. The propaganda aspect was toned down, gore was justified, action was plentiful. Again, I don't care much for military action, so I wasn't that thrilled, although I enjoyed a little bit closer to the end of the film, involving two cars - one with the protagonists and another with the bad guys. Very, very HK/Chinese piece of action, IMO
  19. Man! I really do live in the past!!! Swear to God, I was watching that... film and was wondering - wheres Daniels? In all honesty, I thought that he got replaced by some other actor. In my mind Gary Daniels is still that guy I remember from the nineties, from his UK films and City hunter... Your question got me thinking and for the first time I thought that I got to check the imdb. Man, it was him! That only guy who had a very minor role, but nonetheless had at least some screen presence and tried to act, that old guy was Gary Daniels! I'm speechless. Time has no mercy... Anyway, back to your question. Gary had a very small role, his acting was weak, but not as bad as some other guys. He has a "fight" at the very end of the movie against the protagonist. It's not really a fight, they just basically exchange a few punches, hook-block, hook -block, very basic, he throughs an occasional kick, but it's very slow and really nothing to write home about. Actually, I stopped watching the movie midway through the fight as I realized that there's less than 10 min left and the chances to see anything worth mentioning are slim at best.. Still can't get over the fact that that old guy was Gary Daniels. I would never recognized him... So sad
  20. Wow! MA action scene is almost dead and it's getting worse. I can't believe that the members of this forum, people that obviously have seen the best MA movies out there, have a special thread for this... um...film, where for almost a year they wait for it's release. Well, I literally don't have enough words to describe this horrible, stinking pile of crap that it's creators had nerve to call "an action film" or even "a MA film". Since when a lousy punches exchange scene makes a movie "a MA action film"? From the first opening shot the movie reeks cheapness. Not "low budget", but EXTREMELY inferior trash. The camera work, the directing, the horrible "acting"by a bunch of talent-less hacks and the most stinky, horrible excuse for a soundtrack - all that just screams UNPROFESSIONAL!!! I have no idea why somebody decided that putting a few somewhat musclebound guys together is enough to make a movie?! Who came up with the most ridiculous plot? Who and where found all those "inspiring actors"? What idiot green lit this horrible mess into production and gave money for this?! For the first fifty minutes the viewer is tortured by a horrible "performance" hardly worthy even of a high school play, cringingly bad dialogues and the sheer stupidity of the plot. No action whatsoever. The whole thing looks like a fun project for some fanboys who suddenly got the money to try their hands at making a movie. After an hour of this crap, the hacks decided it's time for some ACTION but unfortunately, they forgot to hire a fight and action choreographers, or maybe they just run out of that little money they had, so it looks like they asked a 10 year old cousin of the "director" to come up with something and the poor kid just told them to punch each other two times and that's it. I haven't seen such crap since.... I dunno, some amateurish youtube home videos by 10 year-olds I watched once? I'm not gonna go into the whole thing - it just not worth the time. I just don't understand, what the target audience for this stinking crap the creators had in mind? Some 8 year-olds that never seen an action film before? Any movie at all? Who in their right mind would sit and watch this atrocity other than relatives of the creators? You know, their moms and dads, all proud that their kids finally made "a real movie" ... Everybody involved it creating that horrible mess should be sued for the false advertisement and fraud. They're literally stealing people's money, selling them amateurish load of crap as a movie. As a punishment they should be forced to watch their creation. And none of them should be allowed to be involved in any movie production in the future I honestly sit through this crap, watching in amazement as that crap of a movie sinks to a new lows by every minute, hoping for a glimpse of something OK-ish, but turned that off 10 min before end. Wow! Just WOW!!! THE WORST CRAP EVER
  21. I second that. (I would also mention Who Am I? as another example of his "far from a masterpiece, but an entertaining" effort. The rest of his filmography as a director is disappointing)

    Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)

I liked it less than the previous installment for some reason. I was craving for some totally out-of-this-world action, something more like the last Fast and furious, but MI6 was more grounded in the real world. I thought the helicopter chase at the end was just plain boring. I mean, how many helicopters following one another do I need? It's been done to death, really. The Paris chase was quite good, yet nothing extraordinary, IMO. There were a lot of nail-biting moments. but nothing spectacular. I can't believe they spent 178 mil for that. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but didn't blow me away as a whole To me, the best action piece was the bathroom fight. My God, that was superb! Fast, brutal, inventive and very hard hitting. I literally jumped out of my seat when the bad guy went through the mirror. The movie theater sound added to the impact. Each blow sounded like a shot. Just a great, great scene I was reading on the IMDB, that three year break between MI5 and MI6 was the shortest in the series. So, I guess, the best case scenario, the next one will come out in three years. I can't wait to see it!
  23. I thought John Landis already re-made it in Kentucky Fried Movie, back 1n 1977
