Don’t Be A Sheky [Long Sleeve]

In classic old-school kung fu films there’s often an element of comedy employing a character that can be described by one or more of the following adjectives: funny, bumbling, screeching, buffoonish, annoying, exaggerated. Typically they speak in a high-pitched voice, and may have giant buck-teeth, enormous hairy moles, goofy facial hair, silly hats, crossed eyes, jerky movements, and laughable fighting skills. The actor Dean Shek may be the actor most associated with playing these types of roles, appearing in many favorites like IRON-FISTED MONK (1977), WARRIORS TWO, SNAKE IN THE EAGLE’S SHADOW, DRUNKEN MASTER, and DIRTY TIGER, CRAZY FROG all in 1978, DANCE OF THE DRUNK MANTIS, ODD COUPLE, and THE FEARLESS HYENA in 1979, and BY HOOK OR BY CROOK (1980) as characters like ‘Master Rocking’ and ‘Skinny Gee’. According to your tolerance for this type of shenanigans you’ll either find these bits hilarious,  grating, or somewhere in between. Personally, though he’s occasionally funny, for the most part I find him to be a nearly unbearable distraction, the ‘Jar Jar Binks of kung fu cinema’, with his character being the sole down-side to the otherwise excellent WARRIORS TWO. – Kung Fu Bob
