What’s On TV This Week (September 26 – October 2)
*TV listings are as fluid as a tai chi fighter and may change without notice. Channels may also vary schedules by region. Movie titles and dates are based on the channel listings and usually reflect US release versions. The scriptures say “the wise man always checks local listings”.
It is officially fall… but as we enter October it is also officially Halloween so the might of the martial movies is supplanted by the heavy hand of horror at the moment and for the next couple of weeks. Don’t be scared though: there is still plenty to watch! If nothing else, you have WALKER: TEXAS RANGER! WGN is running it this week on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and Saturday at 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00 AM. Grit has four episodes every night starting at 7:00 PM and Inspiration airs the Chuck Norris cop drama Tuesday through Saturday at 2:00 AM, Monday through Thursday at 9:00 and 10:00 PM, Friday at 9:00 PM and Sunday at 8:00 and 9:00 PM. Truly, only Chuck Norris is bad enough to be on TV this much… he’s on more than the news!
As far as movies go, things start slow. Monday you have KICKBOXER 4: THE AGGRESSOR (1994) on Sundance at 6:00 AM. Tuesday provides twice the action with THE KARATE KID (2010) at 5:00 PM on FXX and KICKBOXER (1989) at 5:45 PM on Sundance. The slow wind up in action continues into Wednesday with KICKBOXER on Sundance at midnight, THE KARATE KID on FXX again at 2:00 PM and THE CROW (1994) at 10:00 PM on El Rey. They then start off Thursday with CROW 2: CITY OF ANGELS (1996) at midnight, THE CROW: SALVATION (2000) at 2:00 AM and THE CROW: WICKED PRAYER (2004) at 4:00 AM. Sundance offers up KICKBOXER 2: THE ROAD BACK (1991) at 5:00 AM and then Sony brings the Seagal with AGAINST THE DARK (2009) at 7:00 AM and INTO THE SUN (2005) at 8:40 AM. El Rey has the classic kicks with THE DEADLY KNIVES (1972) at 6:00 PM, THE TREASURE HUNTERS (1982) at 7:45 PM and HEROES OF THE EAST(1979) at 10:00 PM. SyFy sneaks in a showing of THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM (2008) at 6:30 PM, too. Friday starts with HEROES SHED NO TEARS (1980) at midnight, LEGENDARY WEAPONS OF CHINA (1982) at 2:00 AM and a re-airing of HEROES OF THE EAST at 4:00 AM, all on El Rey. The only other thing on Friday is another showing of THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM on SyFy at 1:00 PM.
Saturday IFC has CRANK 2: HIGH VOLTAGE (2009) at 12:30 AM then Spike is showing THE EXPENDABLES (2010) at 10:00 AM (and again at 10:30 PM). HDNet airs KILL BILL VOL 1 (2003) at 1:55 PM and FX brings in one for the family with KUNG FU PANDA 2 (2011) at 5:00 PM. Sunday brings another airing of KUNG FU PANDA 2 at 2:30 PM on FX and KILL BILL VOL 2 (2004) at 4:35 PM on HDNet Movie. The rest of the day belongs to El Rey. They start at 10:00 AM with THE SHAOLIN TEMPLE (1976) followed by SHAOLIN ABBOT (1979) at 12:30 PM. THE TREASURE HUNTERS (1982) is up at 2:00 PM, then DEADLY BREAKING SWORD (1979) at 4:00 PM and the week finishes up with THE FLYING DAGGER (1969) at 6:00 PM.
Seriously, don’t get too worried about the lack of kung fu due to Halloween. I have no insider knowledge, but given the stuff on El Rey, I have high hopes for some great Asian action horror later this month… maybe even some sillier stuff. I can easily see them airing a Shaolin exorcist or Chinese vampire marathon, can’t you?
