A brand new television project entitled WARRIOR, based on writings by the legendary Bruce Lee that were found after his death, is being developed for cable network Cinemax.

The series is to be executive produced by director Justin Lin, who may also direct the pilot. The pilot script was written by Cinemax series BANSHEE (2013-) co-creator Jonathan Tropper, who will also serve as Executive Producer alongside Lin and Shannon Lee.

Lin’s previous works include FAST AND FURIOUS (2009) and the Bruceploitation tribute/parody FINISHING THE GAME: THE SEARCH FOR THE NEXT BRUCE LEE (2007), which told a fictional story about the search for the next Bruce Lee, and the finishing of Lee’s last film GAME OF DEATH (1978).

Little is known about the plot at this point, but WARRIOR is set to tell the story of an anti-hero facing a crisis that undermines his quest for vengeance. The project is based on material written by Bruce Lee that have not previously seen the light of day. Lee’s writings were discovered by his daughter, the CEO of Bruce Lee Enterprises, Shannon Lee, who brought the project to Cinemax.

A project entitled THE WARRIOR was first discussed by Bruce Lee in the early seventies. In a December 1971 interview with Pierre Berton, Lee discussed the project THE WARRIOR, the story of a martial artist in a western setting, that eventually became the KUNG FU series starring David Carradine.

Whether or not the upcoming series will be closer to Bruce Lee’s vision of what became KUNG FU remains to be seen. Below is Lee’s interview with Berton, discussion of THE WARRIOR starts at 16 minutes, where Lee also mentions howTHE WARRIOR probably might not see the light of day due to the Hollywood system at the time. Now, nearly 44 years later, his vision may finally be realized.

Besides WARRIOR, fans of “The Little Dragon” also have what Shannon lee described as “The definitive Bruce Lee biopic” to look forward to, alongside the upcoming IP MAN 3D, which will feature a young Bruce Lee, and tell the story of his relationship with the famous Wing Chun master played by Donnie Yen.
