“The Ultimate Fighting Game for Kung Fu movie fans” .. is in the works and needs your help.

There have a been a plethora of video games created based on martial arts dating back to 1984 with the arcade game, ‘Karate Champ’. That same year a video game was released based on the legendary martial artist, ‘Bruce Lee’. It wasn’t until 1987 when the now classic Capcom produced arcade title ‘Street Fighter’ was released, that developers then realized just how popular fighting games based on martial arts could be. We of course then saw the release of series such as Tekken, Mortal Kombat, Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive and so many more began to flood the arcades and the emerging home console market. The feeling you get when pulling off a combo to defeat your enemy, in the game of course, brings a sense of instant gratification which you want to feel over and over again. To this day, there has never been a game that truly captured the essence of a classic kung fu film produced in the 70’s – 80’s, that could be until now!

A new video game is in the works, and has just went up on kickstarter and is looking for some assistance in getting it made. This game is titled ‘Kings of Kung Fu: Masters of the Art‘. Here is an excerpt off the kickstarter page from the game designer Jae Lee;

Kings of Kung Fu is passion project, a love letter to martial arts cinema, a project born out of a lifelong love of Martial arts films. These films were a major part of my childhood. I always wanted to see the best styles in Martial Arts films in one game. Imagine Jeet Kune Do style vs Drunken Boxing or Shaolin Hung Gar style vs Wing Chun. The possibilities are endless, and now for the first time ever you can see your favorite movie fighting styles in one game.

Have a look at the video for the possibilities of what we could see in the final product, please note the disclaimer.

Disclaimer: The footage shown in this video is not indicative of the final content or quality of the final game. The footage is of an early alpha prototype build of the game.

Being that this game is made by an actual fan of classic martial arts films, you will notice the likeness of some of the most recognizable characters to ever appear in films, which were played by:

  • Jackie Chan
  • Jet Li
  • Donnie Yen
  • Mark Long
  • Bruce Lee
  • Tony Jaa
  • Gordon Liu
  • Angela Mao
  • Jim Kelly
  • Julius Carry (Sho’nuff)
Promises of even more characters to come, a few in the works will be based on Hwang Jang Lee and The Snake from ‘The Five Deadly Venoms’ film. The designer will be giving us, the fans, a chance to vote on which characters make it into the game, so make sure to keep up on all the news regarding its development, and to take part in deciding on which kung fu film stars we end up seeing in the final product. Check out the designer Jae Lee on Facebook, check out the official Facebook page for the game, and most importantly, head over to kickstarter to let Jae know you would love to be able to play a fighting game based on characters we’ve all seen in the movies by making a pledge to help fund with its production.
