It’s that time again. Not only is Spring in the air, but a bunch of cinematic kung fu warriors will be too, coming to brilliant life on a New York City screen via rare 35MM film prints!

Subway Cinema, the group that’s also responsible for the annual New York Asian Film Festival, is teaming up with The Metrograph Theater, and treating Asian action cinema fans to another mini-festival of classic kung fu action, starting this Friday, April 8th, and running through the whole weekend.

Bruce Lee, Sammo Hung, Anita Mui, Lau Ching-Wan, Jimmy Wang Yu, Zhang Yimou, Angela Mao, Sammo Hung, Lau Kar-Leung, Yuen Biao, Vincent Zhao, Gong Li, Lam Ching-Ying, and Jordan Chan are among the many Hong Kong stars whose films will be screening. All the movies on the schedule are classics, with not a dud in the bunch. The films showing are Bruce Lee’s epic ENTER THE DRAGON, the Wing Chun kung fu classic THE PRODIGAL SON, Jackie Chan’s unforgettable fight and stunt-packed  RUMBLE IN THE BRONX, director Tsui Hark’s dark and bloody wuxia masterpiece THE BLADE, one of Sammo Hung’s best, the fight-filled PEDICAB DRIVER, the beloved “Oz-ploitation” basher THE MAN FROM HONK KONG (See: The Chinese Boxer vs. one-time James Bond, George Lazenby!), director Benny Chan’s slice of modern-day cops & gangsters mayhem BIG BULLET, and an ultra-rare screening of the gorgeous-looking action-fantasy  A TERRA-COTTA WARRIOR. Trust me, you haven’t properly experienced these films until you’ve seen them on “The Big Screen” with an enthusiastic audience.

In between all the films, there’s also fun stuff like an “Old School Kung Fu Character Costume Contest” on Saturday before the ENTER THE DRAGON screening, offering a fantastic First Prize (and cool runner-up prizes too). And anyone that buys tickets for Saturday’s 5:45 PM of THE MAN FROM HONK KONG or the 8:45 PM of A TERRA-COTTA WARRIOR (and is of legal drinking age with an ID) gets to attend the “Australia Party” with free beer at 7:00 PM!

This year the festival is being held at a new location that sounds out of sight: “Metrograph is a two screen movie house built with archive-quality 35mm film projection, state-of-the-art digital projection, a restaurant, cinema-dedicated rare bookshop, café, and lounge”. The Subway crew that put this festival together are a wonderful group of people, and the audiences are always filled with fans both old and new, of all ages. Don’t miss it!
