For the past few years, the staff of Subway Cinema has focused their attention with introducing and bringing awareness for films from the Far East. The non-profit organization was founded in 2000 with the commitment of expanding and admiration for Asian films and culture. They have continued to be a present in the state of New York with fans coming from different states and countries to attend their festivals. Just recently their organized the Old School Kung Fu Fest, which featured a host of martial arts films from 36th Chamber of Shaolin to Pedicab Driver and a tribute to the late great and one of kung fu cinema’s best directors, Lau Kar-Leung.
2002 marked the first annual New York Asian Film Festival, which showcased films from different countries and recognition for individuals that have and continue to make an impact in the film industry. This year the 13th annual New York Asian Film Festival will open with the international premiere of Alan Mak and Felix Chong’s Overheard 3. The New York Asian Film Festival will commence on June 27 through July 14 2014 with a total of 60 film screenings. Furthermore, a lifetime achievement award will be awarded to Jimmy Wang Yu for his contribution to martial arts cinema.
